Physalis alkekengi, or Chinese lantern, turns from orange to a filigree skeleton in winter, says the RHS. I captured it here before that change and these orange pods add joy to a cold day! Using two delicate mediums – charcoal and watercolour – presented challenges in capturing their their purity against a black and white rendering of a scenic oil painting in the background, by my art teacher, the well-known artist Jane Paige.
